GREEN SPACES IN CITIES – THE BALKANS

Who doesn’t like spring and summer, when nature is awake and the beautiful green color comes back? It’s always nice to go for a walk in a park, do some sports, or seek shade if the sun gets too hot. “Research clearly shows that we need nature in our environment. We need trees in our streets, plants in our gardens, and flowers on our balconies. We need nature as our neighbor.” Check out our suggestions for green spaces in the Balkan cities.

Tivoli Park – Ljubljana

Ljubljana was named the Green Capital of Europe in 2016, which creates the expectation that the city will have ample green spaces. And more than two-hundred-year-old Tivoli Park certainly offers something for everyone.

Located practically in the city center, it is a real pleasure to stroll through the biggest green space in the capital. There are more than 80 species of trees in the park, including several exotic ones. The park’s design is defined by three main walking paths, surrounded by horse chestnut trees, complemented by flower gardens, interesting trees, numerous statues, and several fountains.

Like any well-designed urban park, Tivoli has a veritable maze of paths and trails, some more hidden than others. All are lined with majestic trees, colorful flower beds, and beautiful neoclassical lampposts. Together, they create an ambiance that looks like something out of a postcard. When you start to feel tired, feel free to relax on the grass and connect with Tivoli’s furry and feathered inhabitants.

Marjan – Split

In Croatia’s second-largest city, Split, there is a huge green space known as Marjan, the lungs of the city. This park has everything one could wish for: trees, shady paths, and beaches. That’s right, Marjan is a perfect fusion of green and blue, where nature uniquely meets the sea.

Marjan is a hill located on the peninsula of the picturesque city of Split, which is the largest city in the coastal region of Dalmatia. Covered by a dense Mediterranean pine forest, the park is surrounded by both the city and the sea, offering spectacular views. As early as the 3rd century, the inhabitants of Split used this place as a park. Today, it is a popular destination for walking and recreation for residents and tourists.

One of the most attractive features of Marjan is its proximity to the sea. From the park’s trails, it is easy to reach small coves where you can swim or simply relax on the shore. The crystal-clear waters and the serenity of the surroundings make these areas a perfect place to enjoy a day of relaxation.

Maksimir – Zagreb

Zagreb also has its oasis of peace called Maksimir – a place that looks like something out of a fairy tale. This enchanting park, with its centuries-old oak trees, tranquil ponds, and elegant pavilions, offers a perfect escape from the urban bustle. It is the ideal place to unwind and immerse yourself in a natural and serene environment, right in the heart of the city.

Opened to the public in 1794, Maksimir Park is considered the first public park founded in southern Europe. Its rich history and natural beauty make it a unique site in the city. In addition, the park is home to more than 100 species of birds, making it a paradise for ornithology lovers and those who enjoy wildlife watching.

A special feature in this park is a part which houses the Zagreb Zoo, adding an extra dimension to one of Croatia’s most interesting green spaces in the cities. With a wide variety of animals from all over the world, the zoo allows for a complete nature experience, making Maksimir a place where you can spend the whole day exploring both its natural beauty and biodiversity.

Vrelo Bosne – Sarajevo

This stunning park is located in the suburbs of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is a true natural haven. With its lakes it is home to different species of fish and swans, and in summer provides a place with cooler temperatures for all locals.

The grass in the park has such a vibrant green color that it looks like something out of a dream, thanks to the constant moisture and water it receives. You can lie on a perfectly manicured patch of grass and listen to the gentle murmur of the stream flowing beside you. If the heat gets too much, it’s the perfect place to get your feet wet and cool off.

Vrelo Bosne is made up of several small islands, connected by picturesque bridges, and intertwined with numerous streams and canals. The trails through the park take you through stunning natural surroundings, where you can discover springs and tranquil ponds. One of the most emblematic features of this park is the Roman Bridge, which stands in the middle of the complex of trails and bridges, adding a historical touch to the landscape.

The most fascinating thing about Vrelo Bosne is that it is the source of the Bosna River, one of the most important rivers in Bosnia. The freshness of the water, the lush vegetation, and the cool wind coming down from the mountains create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

Green spaces tend to reduce stress, improve your mood, encourage physical activity and social contact and improve mental health and concentration.
